Qualities and Skills of A Superintendent
A Superintendent needs to have the following qualities to serve well during this phase of the Church’s life:
- Loves God and preaches salvation through Jesus Christ. This requires a deep and abiding faith and spiritual life. A Superintendent is first and foremost a spiritual leader.
- Loves people and wants the best for others.
- A broad and deep theological understanding of God, the Church and the world and the ability to teach biblical and theological concepts.
- Listens to learn. We need leaders who listen to laity and clergy and desire to continue to learn and grow, especially by listening.
- Curiosity. Leaders who are genuinely interested in understanding by asking good questions.
- Respect others and the office of superintendency by keeping confidentiality.
- Committed and loyal to serving congregations and The United Methodist Church to advance their mission and ministry.
- Excellent administrative and communication skills.
- A coach and mentor to clergy. I expect when Superintendents meet with clergy, they will ask the following questions:
- Where have you witnessed God at work in and through your congregation?
- What is going well and why?
- What has been your most important learning during this month? How are you applying this learning?
- What is one important challenge are you facing and how are you overcoming these challenges?
- What support do you need from me to excel in your leadership and ministry?
No leader is perfect but the superintendents that I am appointing all have committed to continue to grow in these qualities and skills.
Priority of A District Superintendent
The priority of the superintendents is to develop clergy to serve effectively in the church and the world. Superintendents are also to grow and develop congregations. This requires assisting congregational leaders to set priorities and goals and support the pastor and lay leadership to achieve their goals by deepening the faith of the members and teaching them to connect with the people in the community through witness, mercy, and justice ministries.
