Nigeria bishop convenes meeting to address violence

Bishop John Wesley Yohanna, leader of The United Methodist Church in Nigeria, organized a peace and reconciliation meeting on Aug. 17 following incidents of violence in the Karim Lamido area of Taraba state. The meeting was prompted by the Aug. 2 murder of a farmer in Munga Dosso, followed by the killings of several Fulani herdsmen, which authorities are investigating as possible retaliatory attacks.

Conflict among Nigerian United Methodists is hardly new but has escalated sharply in recent months.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of that came in June when two aides to Nigeria Area Bishop John Wesley Yohanna reported several clergy and laity to the police for allegedly causing disorder within the Nigerian United Methodist Church. The government pays close attention to the stability of the country’s churches and other institutions.

Four of those reported ultimately landed in jail on charges that they violated Nigerian security laws by sharing photos of themselves taken at the police station.

United Methodists in Africa and the Philippines are fighting COVID-19 by making personal protective gear, raising awareness in rural areas and busy cities and breaking down myths. And they are using experiences with Ebola to stop the spread of the virus.

While Africa has had fewer cases so far, the number has now topped 10,000 in 52 countries, the World Health Organization reported on April 8. In the Philippines, WHO reported more than 3,700 confirmed cases.
